After years of seeing my older brother playing his Gameboy, I finally got one of my own. The newest model, the Gameboy Advance SP. The one that flips open.
For once, I had something that was just mine. Something my brother didn’t have. I wouldn’t have to be the little sister hovering over his shoulder, asking when it was my turn. He now would have to learn patience, humility, and experience the crushing jealousy of watching me play my Dora the Explorer game.
Moments after I unwrapped my sacred gift, my parents bring out another wrapped box.
Another gift they just forgot to put out on the table? No.
A gift for... my brother?
On... my birthday?
And not just any gift. A Game Boy Advance SP. The same one I had just gotten, but in black.
Suddenly, my long-awaited main character moment had a co-star.
At the time, I called it betrayal.
Years later, I'd call it tension, timing, and a reveal no one saw coming.
